Clarinda’s Mixed Rubbers Team Reaches Grand Final
On the last Saturday in August, under cold and windy skies at Dingley Tennis Club, Clarinda Tennis Club’s Mixed Rubbers Section 3 team took to the court in the Grand Final against Port Melbourne Blue.
The team’s journey began back in May with a core group of familiar faces – Cory, Max, Allie, Gayle, and Janet – who had all played together in the previous season. Clarinda quickly stamped their authority on the competition, dominating week after week and suffering only one loss across 14 rounds. Their consistency and determination saw them finish deservedly on top of the ladder, a remarkable achievement in itself.
But the road was far from smooth. After Round 4, injury struck when Gayle was sidelined, and the team turned to Courtney, who stepped up admirably as an emergency. Just as stability was restored, misfortune struck again after Round 10 with Janet’s injury, forcing another change as Bronwyn was called upon to fill the gap. Throughout the season, the squad leaned on the support of Leo and Brandon, who filled in for Cory and Max when needed, proving that success in tennis is never just about individuals, but about the whole club pulling together.
By the time finals arrived, Clarinda’s resilience was tested once more. In the cruellest twist, Courtney was unavailable for both the semi-final and the Grand Final. With Bronwyn ineligible, the Bayside Tennis Association appointed Kaye as a replacement. Despite her best efforts, the reshuffled side of Cory, Max, Allie, and Kaye faced the daunting task of taking on Port Melbourne Blue.
With Gayle and Janet watching proudly from the sidelines, Clarinda gave everything they had. They fought for every point, battled the wind, and showed the spirit that had carried them all season. In the end, it wasn’t enough to secure the premiership, but the scoreboard did not tell the full story.
Clarinda’s campaign was a triumph of character: a team that faced adversity at every turn yet still reached the Grand Final. The season embodied teamwork, resilience, and perseverance – qualities that no defeat can take away. Though Port Melbourne Blue lifted the pennant, Clarinda’s players walked away as winners in their own right, having written a season the club will long be proud of.
