Clarinda Take on Australia’s Best at the National League Finals 2026

Clarinda Take on Australia’s Best at the National League Finals 2026

A fourth-place finish, some outstanding tennis and plenty of team spirit – Clarinda make their mark on the national stage.

Clarinda Tennis Club made its mark on the national tennis stage, with Clarinda (Possums) finishing an impressive fourth overall in the Open Section 2 at the inaugural Tennis Australia National League Finals on the Gold Coast.

Over three days of competitive tennis, the team went head-to-head with some of the strongest community tennis teams from across Australia, showing that Clarinda has what it takes to compete at the highest level of community league tennis.

Representing Clarinda were team captain Tri, along with David, Vincent, Tung, Leo and Cory – a great mix of experience and youth who came together to represent the club with pride.

So Close to a National Podium

The competition was played over three days, with every match counting as the teams battled for national honours.

Clarinda finished fourth overall, but the final standings don’t tell the whole story. Clarinda was right in the thick of the competition, pushing the second- and third-placed teams in two hard-fought encounters.

In both matches, the teams finished equal on sets, with Clarinda narrowly missing out on the overall result by just five games against the second-placed team and three games against the third.

There were also some missed opportunities along the way, particularly in the match against the eventual top team. Clarinda had opportunities to take control, including set points that could have changed the course of the match. Unfortunately, losing that crucial opening set proved costly, highlighting just how fine the margins were at this level of competition.

It was a reminder that at national level, every point, game and set can make a difference. While there may have been a few chances the team would have liked back, the team showed they could match it with the very best teams in the competition.

One particularly impressive achievement came from David and Vincent, who played together throughout the tournament and lost just one set between them across the entire three days. An outstanding effort and a great example of the consistency and teamwork that helped drive Clarinda’s campaign.

A Team That Played for Each Other

While the tennis was certainly the main event, one of the biggest highlights of the trip was the camaraderie that developed within the team.

With a combination of older and younger players, the team brought together different generations of Clarinda tennis, creating a great team atmosphere both on and off the court.

Between matches, the team enjoyed spending time together, sharing dinners and making the most of their Gold Coast experience. There was plenty of encouragement, laughter and support, with everyone looking out for one another throughout the trip.

The weather was also a little kinder than expected, with cooler conditions making the three days of tennis more comfortable, although some rain each day added its own challenges.

Proud to Represent Clarinda

Finishing fourth in a national competition is a fantastic achievement for Clarinda Tennis Club, particularly when you consider just how close the team came to finishing on the podium.

Clarinda proved they could match it with some of the best community tennis teams in the country, and the narrow margins against the second- and third-placed teams show that Clarinda was never far away from an even bigger result.

The team returned home with plenty of great memories, a sense of pride in what they achieved and, hopefully, the appetite for another crack at the national title.

Congratulations to Tri, David, Vincent, Tung, Leo and Cory on a fantastic effort. You did Clarinda Tennis Club proud!
